Announcing the 2012 Nat'l Miss Heart of Gold Supreme Queen Kayla B.
We'll post more information later but briefly, Kayla has done a lot of fundraising for the epilepsy foundation. This year Kayla, along with friends and family, raised $3,700 in a walk-a-thon with Kayla's Krew, which brings her total raised in 4 years to over $21,000.

We were so happy to receive this formal portrait!! There's a golden heart inside this golden haired young lady for sure. She's such a caring member of her large family. She makes cards for sick children, despite having some times of illness herself. And she's involved in community programs to make a difference.

Master Luke is all boy and always on the go. He never lets anything hold him back and has a heart full of courage. He's a sweetie as well as a Master Sweetheart! :-)

Queen Madi has been so busy with her job as Youth Advocate for the ADA (see link under her photo to the right). I'm sharing a couple of photos of her to show the important people she has met. :-) That's Crystal Bowersox at the mike. I think you'll know the other two!
She's been in San Diego and in Orlando. And she's had time to be a Counselor in Training at Camp Possibilities!! Way to go, Queen Madi!!

Nat'l Miss Heart of America, Madi, is having an exciting week as she continues with her year as the American Diabetes Association's Youth Advocate. I'll let her tell about it in her own words: "It is exciting to say that this update is brought to you clear from the opposite side of the United States...all the way from Sunny San Diego California! I am out here for a week, representing the American Diabetes Association as the National Youth Advocate for the Community Volunteer Leadership Conference and the ADA 71st Scientific Sessions. Since we arrived here on Wednesday I have had some pretty amazing experiences. I had the great opportunity to address the group with a speech about the importance of the ADA Safe at School Campaign as part of the ACT advocacy session. I have met some of the most dedicated diabetes volunteers and advocates the world has ever seen, I have seen the unveiling of the Association’s 2012-15 Strategic Plan and have had opportunities to work with our local market on ideas and strategies to help us meet our new goals. I am completely impressed that the “new” vision statement for the association comphttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifletely and totally matches my own…I dream of a” life free of diabetes and all its burdens”. Being out here, I am even more determined to make that dream my personal reality and the reality for the 18.8 Americans currently diagnosed with diabetes, the 7 million more who do not yet know they have it, and the millions more who are impacted by diabetes in many other ways. Yes… there WILL be a cure!"

This is a busy time of year for everyone. Schools are wrapping up, with events, tests, projects. Gardens and other fun outdoor activities are calling.
But here's an update on our Queens, who remain busy with activities which help others:
Queen Kylee has been organizing her Spirit Sparkplugs room. She is going to get us another official photo soon, with the larger tiara.
Queen Madi has been planning a fundraiser for $ for Japan.
Queen Terri is keeping up her site which gives info about Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia.
Princess Deanna is still putting together cards to give to children who are sick, and is maintaining high grades, even though she's been a bit under the weather. We can't wait to see the fun official photo she has planned.
Queen Ava has been having Easter fun with her family and remains an inspiration to all with CDH!

"This week is the American Diabetes Association Call to Congress. It will be exciting to be at an event with so many dedicated diabetes advocates from around the country all together for a common purpose.. very powerful. Madi will have an opportunity to address the whole group as National Youth Advocate, with the opportunity to speak to senators and congressmen on Capitol Hill to discuss current trends in diabetes and the epidemic numbers of people being diagnosed, as well as the need for increased funding to STOP diabetes! Announcing the Nat'l Miss Heart of Gold Supreme Princess, lovely Deanna T of beautiful Maryland. Deanna is a Cadet Fire Fighter at her local volunteer fire department. When it is fire safety week she teaches the schools how to stop drop and roll. She also helps at her local Brownies. She helps watch children for anyone that asks and of course is always willing to help anyone. She frequently helps out at home with the care of a younger brother who has special medical needs. You're amazing, Deanna!

We welcome back Madison Dodge to our royal family, this time with the title of Coronet's Nat'l Miss Heart of America.
This recent news from Queen Madi is so exciting! I will use Madi's mother's own words to explain:
"Yesterday Evening Madi received a call to tell her that she has been chosen as the American Diabetes Association’s 2011 National Youth Advocate! The application process for this is rigorous with numerous essays, a portfolio of work for the ADA, letters of recommendation and a video project. Madi has applied each year since she was 9. She has been the youth/teen ambassador for Delaware/Eastern Shore and a Delaware Advocate for years… all in preparation for what has been a major goal of hers… to serve as the National Youth Advocate!

In this one year position Madi will work in close coordination with the ADA to communicate diabetes advocacy message through Nation-wide speaking engagements, the internet, social media and directly to policymakers. She will meet with elected officials about funding, health care and discrimination policies. She will attend training and National Advocacy meetings in DC. She will travel throughout the country to ADA Camps to teach and hopefully inspire children with diabetes… This is the part that she is MOST excited about!"

Madi herself puts it this way:
"You know how I applied for the National Youth Advocate? Well.......
I WAS CHOSEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am soooooo excited!!!!! I have worked at this for 8 years and now I'm finally old enough and now I get to travel all over the country and be a spokesperson and advocate for the ADA..."

Nat'l Miss Heart of America Rachel leaves with her Touring Choir next week. We wish her good luck and lots of fun! (Little sister, Lisa, auditioned for and was accepted into the Town Choir!)
Queen Rachel and her brother, David, have put in a lot of time and effort on their Go Orange ASPCA project for 4-H, educating school children on being kind to animals. Once again they won a prize for their efforts.

Nat'l Miss Heart of America 2010 Queen, Rachel Bettendorf, took her trained dog, Bandit, to visit schoolchildren and teach them about being kind to animals. They visitied 2 different schools, 12 different classes and taught over 130 children about animal cruelty. One of the classrooms was that of Queen Rachel's sister, Lisa. Big brother, David, helped teach this important lesson.

She's been busy in recently with a special TV series about women. She has hosted the Presque Isle Kiwanis Club Talent Revue, a talent/scholarship program for 30 youngsters from Northern Maine. In coming weeks, she'll be the Team Leader for her TV station's Relay for Life team and will appear at a Home and Garden Show.
Shaw recently was hospitalized for a sprained back and we hope she's feeling better as she is a very busy and involved young woman--and is also planning her wedding! Picture are Shawn and her fiance, AJ.

Royal Portraits of Nat'l Miss Heart of America Rachel Bettendorf

What an exciting week!! We just announced a new Queen (see previous post) and now we have the Royal Portraits of Queen Rachel, Nat'l Miss Heart of America.
One is of Queen Rachel with Bandit. Her Mom says, "She and Bandit just passed their Canine Good Citizenship level 2 for the AKC and she is so proud." Rachel will now be working with Bandit with the goal of having him become a therapy dog. "She is quite excited about the comfort he can bring to others."
In addition to working with Bandit and her other regular activities, Rachel is working towards a level Ribbon 2 in choir. She recently received superior ratings from her guitar teacher. In addition she was chosen, along with one other student from the entire School of the Arts, to receive the honor of attending three performances (The Aluminum Show, Wicked in May and Mary Poppins in August), study sessions/reception and meet the artist/director after the show.
Queen Rachel's parents, her sister, and her two brothers are all very proud of her, as are we at Coronet Pageants!

Leadership, Community Service and Volunteerism are the principles Shawn Cunningham is trying to instill in the countless numbers of young people she'll encounter during her service as a multiple titleholder in the State of Maine.

Embarking on a statewide speaking tour, Shawn has traveled to many communities throughout the Pine Tree State spreading her message that through leadership and service individuals CAN make a difference...and empower themselves, their communities and subsequently America to change toward the better! In addition to her speaking tour, Shawn continues to meet with state dignitaries, civic leaders and community organizations on a slew of appearances.

Shawn's motto:"Succeed and Soar!!!"

Shawn is an Anchor/Reporter for WAGM-TV and serves as the anchor for the station's 5:30 p.m. newscast, "The First Edition" AND the Primetime Anchor/Producer of "The Late Edition", as well as the station's Ten O'Clock newscast "Newsource 8 at Ten". Shawn is also the station's Education Beat reporter, Consumer Reporter for "Consumerwatch" and the Health/Medical Reporter for "Medical Mondays".

Since joining WAGM, she has received several awards including two 2003 Aegis Media Awards, three Maine Association of Broadcasters awards and two Telly Awards. Shawn won awards from the National Federation of Press Women. Some of Shawn's stories have appeared on CBS Newspath, Maine Public Broadcasting and CNN Network.

Shawn is a Past President of the Maine Federation of Business and Professional Women and was named by the organization as its 2005 and 2003 Maine Young Career Woman of the Year.

Shawn is extremely proud of her pageant background and experiences. Shawn was crowned Ms. US of America, Ms. Royal America, Ms. Outstanding Woman in America 2008 after being crowned and Miss Maine OWA she placed first runner up at the 2006 Outstanding Woman in America Competition. In addition she also received two prestigious awards for Lifetime Achievement and Outstanding Leadership.

Shawn has also been Ms. African American United Lifetime Ambassador, Ms. African American United 2008, Miss African American United 2005, Miss Woman of Color.

Shawn is currently involved with several community service projects in Northern Maine including Board Memberships of the PI Chamber of Commerce and Momentum Aroostook. She is an active committee chair for the PI Kiwanis Club, Caribou BPW and Team WAGM for the Aroostook County Branch of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

New Ambassador Title

We hope to have our new Ambassador program fully worked out very soon. Basically, any of our Queens have the opportunity to work toward a FREE title, awarded every year on New Year's Day to the Queen who has amassed the most points. Points are earned as follows:
3 points for every appearance in crown and sash
5 points for volunteer activities in crown and sash (or sash-or nametag-if a crown isn't appropriate for the activity)
5 points for every PAID contestant that you refer (and you'll also get $5 off on your own entry for every PAID contestant you refer)
The winner will receive a tiara and sash reading Coronet's Nat'l Miss Ambassador.

As we are close to the announcement of the new Nat'l Miss Heart of Gold 2010, We want to wish Nat'l Miss Heart of Gold Supreme Queen 09 Madison Dodge the best of luck in the future. She is such an outstanding young woman, with amazing talent and a true empathy for others. She has done an incredible amount of work for the American Diabetes Association and we know she will continue this in the future. Coronet is pleased to announce (from Las Vegas :-) the name of our new Nat'l Miss Heart of America.
Rachel Bettendorf is a middle school student from North Carolina who stays busy with guitar lessons, choir, touring choir, 4-H, dog training, children's theater classes. Rachel was an outstanding scholarship student at a jazz camp this summer with the scholarship provided by the Community School of the Arts, featured on the Today Show. Those who are lucky enough to hear her play want to get her autograph now!
Rachel is a wonderful sister and daughter in a very loving family. We know she'll be an incredible addition to our royal family as well.

Nat'l Little Miss Sweetheart Ava Elizabeth Helmick

Coronet Pageants is pleased to be able to make the announcement of the winner of the Supreme Queen title for Nat'l Little Miss Sweetheart. Ava Elizabeth Helmick is the daughter of Terri and Brian Helmick and the sister of Lexis and Emeline. She is a survivor of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. Having been given a 20-30% chance of survival at birth, Ava is quite a fighter. She survived and grew stronger and returned home with her family. Then, in words from Ava's blog:
"...on October 3rd, 2008, just a month after my 2nd birthday I got deathly ill. My Mommy took me to the doctor that Friday three times. She knew in her heart that I had re-herniated. She pushed really hard for my medical care. After almost 30 hours from my first symptom I was being air lifted to University Hospitals in Iowa City.... I spent 47 days in the hospital, most of that in the intensive care unit. I am at home now where my Mommy does all my nursing care. She tells me I am a lot of work but I know she loves me and that is why she still smiles and makes me laugh....I've been told I'm a brave little girl. God has blessed me and my family beyond measure. My Mommy feels lucky that we still here with them. I hear I have touched so many lives.

Because of Ava's fight, her parents have done a great deal for CDH awareness. The whole family has been involved in starting an awareness walk and Terri was instrumental in having a proclamation signed by Iowa's Governor Culver.
Ava will have another surgery on June 5th to open blockages in her small bowel. Please pray for Queen Ava, Queen Terri, and the rest of the Helmick family at this time.

Coronet Pageants is VERY PROUD to announce the 2009 Nat'l Ms. Heart of the Home Supreme Queen, Terri Helmick of Iowa!
Terri is an incredible wife and devoted mother of three beautiful girls, Lexis, Emeline, and Ava. She's a talented photographer and singer, but her life took a detour at the birth of her youngest daughter. Ava was born with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia and Terri and her family are tireless advocates for CDH awareness and education. In fact, Terri was instrumental in having Iowa's Gov. Culver sign a CDH Awareness Proclamation. Terri has worked with an international CDH awarness organization but has now founded her own support group, called Allmiracles, for mothers whose children have problems at http://allmiracles.blogspot.com .
At birth Terri's third daughter Ava was given a 20-35% chance of survival. Last fall she reherniated and spent 47 days in intensive care before returning home. Currently she is facing another surgery to continue to repair her intestines.

The Helmick family ready for Ava's Awareness Walk

In Terri's words:
"I have a passion for raising awareness for my 3rd daughter's birth defect called congenital diaphragmatic hernia. I am all about the simple things. I am a wife and a Mother. I love to savor each and every moment in life, for I know how fragile life really is."

"Our daughter Ava was born with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. CDH is when (inside of the womb) the diaphragm does not form properly. The abdominal organs move up into the chest cavity, compromising the heart and lungs. Fifty percent of CDH babies die. Sometimes with proper diagnosis and treatment, the babies have a better chance at birth.

We held our First Annual, "Ava's Awareness Walk" on March 27, 2008. I was so touched at how many family and friends came out to walk for CDH Awareness. I held back tears as I spoke about Ava's friends that have died fighting this birth defect. I played the song, "Little Angels" that Tamra (my sister) and I created for all the CDH babies. After walking around the beautiful lake we had a balloon release. I did it to remember all the precious angels that had been taken, far too soon, from their Mothers arms. They will forever be in our hearts.
My goal is to educate and provide valuable knowledge and information about Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. I want to let as many know of this deadly birth defect as possible and to share HOPE.

Queen Madi Honored in D.C.

Queen Madi, Nat'l Miss Heart of Gold, was recently honored in D.C. at the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. She's pictured here with one of the other Middle School honorees as well as with the Delaware High School honoree and Senator Kaufman, AND with former First Lady Laura Bush.
Meeting Laura Bush was one of the highlights of a busy weekend of sightseeing and awards ceremony! Another was hearing actor Jason Ritter speak!

Hi All~
As some of you know, Madi had the great opportunity to work with Johnson & Johnson on a story they were doing for their annual report on the PING insulin delivery system that she uses to help control her diabetes. The interviewer, the photo crew and the film crew came to our house and followed Madi through a day of school and her Broadway Bound classes after school. The finished products (video) are now available on their website if you are interested in seeing them. I want to point out that on my computer, I scrolled over a small photo of Madi that said Girl on the Go underneath and then I did click on see the video. The video you want is Girl on the Go. This also discusses Madi's volunteer work for The American Diabetes Association, her incredible fundraising, her award from American Girl. The Nat'l Ms. Heart of the Home title is for the woman whose primary focus has been the home. Whatever your work status, do you invest a great deal of time in your home and family? Do you still find time to volunteer in the community, making it a better place for all families? We know it's hard to compete in traditional Ms. pageants if you have spent time as a stay-at-home wife and mother. Tell us how you have made contributions to your community while remaining primarily focused on your home life and you have an EXCELLENT chance of earning a national title.

Nat'l Miss Heart of Gold wins Prudential Award

We're so happy to announce that Madi Dodge, our Nat'l Miss Heart of Gold Supreme Queen, has been named one of two of Delaware's top two youth volunteers by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism. The awards program, now in its 14th year, is conducted by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

Nat'l Miss Heart of Gold, Madison Dodge of DE

We are so proud to announce Madison "Madi" Dodge as our new Nat'l Miss Heart of Gold Supreme Queen!! Madi exemplifies the titleholder with a true heart of gold.
Madi works tirelessly as an ambassador for the American Diabetes Association, to raise money for a cure. She was diagnosed with type one diabetes when she was 5. Madi has organized and implemented many fundraisers to raise money for her walk team, Madison's Prayer. Madi has been team captain of her team since she was 5. Madi not only holds annual events like her "Skate 4 a CURE" but she also makes and sells individually handcrafted journals that she has named "Journal magic". All proceeds from the sale of her journals goes to help support people with diabetes and to help find a cure.

Madi works hard in public advocacy for people with diabetes, meeting yearly with her congressmen and representatives to keep them abreast of the needs and complications of living with diabetes. Madi puts together and distributes bags that she delivers to people who are newly diagnosed. She sets up information booths at community events to share information about diabetes and she has spoken at many public events as well. Madi is determined to do all that she can to beat diabetes! Nothing gets in the way of achieving her goals!
However, this fall something nearly did. Madi was diagnosed with a relatively rare disease, Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis and Ulcerative duodenitis. To make a long story short, this disease of the white blood cells, eosinophils, has caused extensive damage to Madi's stomach and has robbed her of her ability to eat foods by mouth. For the last three months Madi has been tube fed an elemental formula to allow her body to heal. She will hopefully begin the long road back to eating soon. At this point she is healing, and we are hopeful that she will return to school soon. She has been on homebound instruction for three months. None of this has broken Madi's incredible spirit, and it has not gotten in the way of her goal to help cure diabetes. Although this "new" disease is not curable, and it is not related to her diabetes in any way, she is determined to fight it as well! Madi is blessed with a joyful, giving, spirit!

Two Queens battle ice storm

April, Nat'l Ms Heart of the home, and Samantha, Nat'l Miss Heart of America, have endured a week without power after the devastating KY ice storm. The Boy Scout Troop did a lot of volunteer clean up for the elderly after the storm.

Queen April's Holiday Volunteerism

During the Christmas holidays, Nat'l Ms Heart of the Home Supreme Queen, April, and her family cooked and served a Christmas meal to a Scout Troop, including homemade cheesecakes.
Her husband took the boys to volunteer and spend the night at a homeless shelter. Very moved by this experience, they are planning a summer cookout for the 150 women at the shelter.
Nat'l Miss Heart of America, Samantha, helped prepare a dinner and enjoyed The Nutcracker over the holidays!

"My name is April Denise Bryant Johnson. I am 33 years old and my birthday is in---April :-). I have been married to Jason Johnson since 1997. I have two children, Jacob, age 11, and Samantha, age 8. I have a degree in Human Services and previously worked as a state social worker and also as a service coordinator for children with developmental delays. Disabled in a car accident in december 2004, this ended my dream of going back to school to become a nurse. I have since started to substitute teach occasionally which I have found that I really enjoy. I enjoy spending time with my family, consignment/thrift store shopping, ebay, nature, taking pictures, and crafts, when and if I ever have time. I volunteer with both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts and also any other opportunity that may arise."

She is the mother of our Nat'l Miss Heart of America Supreme Queen, Samantha Johnson. April is also the proud mother of a wonderful son and the wife of a truly great guy. Coronet Pageants is pleased to announce that Samantha Rose Johnson of Kentucky has been named Nat'l Miss Heart of America Supreme Queen.
Samantha is an excellent third grade student! A member of Girl Scouts of America since kindergarden, Samantha and her family adopted an elderly person for Christmas last year. She has donated eye glasses and helped feed the homeless.
When she was just four years old, Samantha won the title of Rising Star Supreme. She has won several Most Photogenic awards as well as Most Beautiful Eyes.
Samantha has also recently won the title of Rolling Fork Festival Queen.
She is a very happy and loving child who brings sunshine to all that she meets.

Her first appearance was at My Old Kentucky Home state park.
